I. "to spend", Thuc., etc.; δαπ. εἴς τι "to spend upon" a thing, id=Thuc., Xen.; so also as Dep. "to spend", Hdt.; ὅσα δεδαπάνησθε εἰς τὸν πόλεμον Dem.

2. "to expend, consume, use up", Arist.:—metaph. of persons, ὑπὸ νόσου δαπανᾶσθαι Plut.

II. Causal, τὴν πόλιν δαπανᾶν "to put" it "to expense", Thuc.
