(late form of ὠδίς), -ῖνος, ἡ [in LXX forחֶבֶל (and wrongly forחֶבֶל, cf. Ac, l.c.), חִיל, etc.;]

a birth pang, travail pain: I Th 5:3; metaph., of extreme suffering, Mt 24:8, Mk 13:8; ὠδῖνες θανάτου (Ps 17 (18):4הֶבְלֵימָוֶת), Ac 2:24.†
