ὑπερήφανος

ὑπερήφανος, -ον

(< ὑπέρ, φαίνομαι, c. η pleonast., v. Kühner3, I, 189) [in LXX for זֵד, גֵּאֶה, לוּץ, etc.;]

showing oneself above others;

(a) in good sense (Plat., al.), pre-eminent, splendid;

(b) more freq. in had sense, and so always in Scr., arrogant, haughty, disdainful (v. Westc. Epp. Jo., 65b): Ro 1:30, II Ti 3:2; διανοίᾳ καρδίας, Lk 1:51; opp. to ταπεινός (as in Pr 3:34), Ja 4:6, I Pe 5:5(LXX).†
