ἀεί
Etym. The Root is ΑΕϜ; cf. Lat. aevum, aetas, i. e. aeuitas.
"always, for ever", Hom., etc.; often with other words of time, διαμπερὲς αἰεί, συνεχὲς αἰεί, ἐμμενὲς αἰεί, id=Hom.; ἀεὶ καθ᾽ ἡμέραν, καθ᾽ ἡμέραν ἀεί, ἀεὶ καὶ καθ᾽ ἡμέραν, ἀεὶ κατ᾽ ἐνιαυτόν, ἀεὶ διὰ βίου, etc., Plat., etc.; v. εἰσαεί:—ὁ ἀεὶ χρόνος eternity, Hdt., Plat.; οἱ ἀεὶ ὄντες the immortals, Xen., etc.:—but, ὁ αἰεὶ βασιλεύων the king "for the time being", Hdt.; τοῖσι τούτων αἰεὶ ἐκγόνοισι to their descendants "for ever", id=Hdt.
