αἰδώς

Etym. αἰδέομαι

I. "a sense of shame, shame, modesty, self-respect", Hom., etc.:—personif., Ζηνὶ σύνθακος θρόνων Αἰδώς "Shame" that shares his throne with Zeus, Soph.

2. "regard for others, respect, reverence", Theogn.; τὴν ἐμὴν αἰδῶ "respect" for me, Aesch.

II. "that which causes shame", and so,

1. "a shame", Il.; as an exclam., "shame!" αἰδώς, Ἀργεῖοι, κακ᾽ ἐλέγχεα! id=Il.; αἰδώς, ὦ Λύκιοι: ποῖ φεύγετε; id=Il.

2. = τὰ αἰδοῖα, id=Il.
