I. "Zeus", Lat. Ju-piter, father of gods and men, son of Kronos and Rhea, hence called Κρονίδης, Κρονίων, husband of Hera: —Hom. makes him rule in the lower air (ἀήρ); hence rain and storms come from him, Ζεὺς ὕει, etc.:—in oaths, οὐ μὰ Ζῆνα Hom., attic; so μὰ Δία, νὴ Δία, attic
