Etym. from same Root as ἱμάς, μάσθλης

I. "a whip, scourge", Hom., Hdt., etc.; ἵππου μ. "a horsewhip", Hdt.; ὑπὸ μαστίγων βαίνειν to advance "under the lash", of soldiers flogged on, id=Hdt.; so, τοξεύειν ὑπὸ μ. Xen.

II. metaph. "a scourge, plague", Il., Aesch.; διπλῇ μ., τὴν Ἄρης φιλεῖ, i. e. fire and sword, Aesch.; μ. Θεοῦ of sickness, NTest.
