Etym. pres. part of οἰκέω
(sc. γῆ) "the inhabited world", a term used to designate "the Greek world", as opp. to barbarian lands, Hdt., Dem., etc.:—so in Roman times, "the Roman world", NTest.: metaph., ἡ οἰκ. ἡ μέλλουσα "the world" to come, i. e. the kingdom of Christ, id=NTest.
