I. "dwelling round", Hdt.: —οἱ π. "neighbours", id=Hdt.
II. in Laconia, οἱ περίοικοι were "the free inhabitants", being remnants of the original population, who enjoyed civil but not political liberty, opp. on the one hand to the Spartans, and on the other to the Helots, id=Hdt., Thuc.
