I. interrog. adv. "whence?"
1. of place, ἠρώτα, τίς εἴη καὶ π. ἔλθοι Od.; ποῖ δὴ καὶ πόθεν; Plat.;—c. gen., τίς πόθεν εἶς ἀνδρῶν; who and "from what" country art thou? Il.; πόθεν γῆς; Eur.
2. of origin, πόθεν γένος εὔχεται εἶναι; "from what source" does he boast that his race is? Od.
3. in speaking, π. ἄρξωμαι; Aesch.
4. of the cause, "whence? wherefore?" id=Aesch.; alone, πόθεν; "how can it be? impossible!" Eur., Ar.
