Etym. πολλός, πολύς

I. of Time, "many times, often, oft", Il., etc.; c. gen., π. τοῦ μηνός "often in" the month, Xen.

II. of Degree and Number, π. μύριοι "many" tens of thousands, Plat.

2. τὸ π. "mostly, for the most part", Pind.: "very much, altogether", Theocr.

III. in attic, after εἰ, ἐάν, ἄν, "perhaps, perchance", Lat. si forte, Ar., Plat.; so, μὴ πολλάκις, Lat. ne forte, Thuc., etc.
