I. "to terrify, scare", Anth.:—Pass. "to be scared, dismayed", φρένες ἐπτοίηθεν Od.; ἐπτοημένος Aesch., Eur.

II. metaph. "to flutter, excite" by any passion, τό μοι καρδίαν ἐπτόασεν Sapph.:—Pass. "to be in a flutter, be passionately excited", Theogn.; ἐπτοημένοι φρένας Aesch.; ὡς ἐπτόηται Eur.:—generally, μέθ᾽ ὁμήλικας ἐπτοίηται "he gapes like one distraught" after his fellows, Hes.; τὸ πτοηθέν "distraction", Eur.
