ὑποδέω

Infl. fut. -δήσω

I. "to bind or fasten under", Hdt.

II. esp. "to underbind", i. e. "to shoe", because the sandals or shoes were bound on with straps, Plat.:—Mid. "to bind under one's feet, put on shoes", Ar., Xen., etc.; also c. acc., ὑποδησάμενος κοθόρνους Hdt.:—so in perf. pass., ὑποδήματα ὑποδεδεμένος "with" shoes "on one's feet", Plat.; and absol., ὑποδεδεμένοι "with their shoes on", Xen.; so, ὑποδεδεμένοι τὸν ἀριστερὸν πόδα "with shoes on" the left foot, Thuc.
