I. "to leave remaining", Od., Thuc., etc.

2. of things, "to fail" one, ὑπολείψει ὑμᾶς ἡ μισθοφορά Lys.

II. Pass., c. fut. mid., "to be left remaining", Hom., Hdt.

2. of things, "to remain in force", Thuc.

3. "to stay behind", Od.: c. gen., ὑπολείπεσθαι τοῦ στόλου "to stay behind" the expedition, i. e. not to go upon it, Hdt.

4. "to be left behind" in a race, Ar.: of stragglers in an army, "to lag behind", Xen.; ὑπ. μικρὸν τοῦ στόματος "to fall behind" the front rank, id=Xen.

5. metaph. "to be inferior to", τινός Arist.
