I. "to turn round about, turn back", ἵππους Il.; Βακχίαν ὑποστρέφων ἅμιλλαν "bringing back" the Bacchic struggle, i. e. changing sorrow into tumultuous joy, Soph.
II. intr. "to turn about, turn short round", Il., Hdt., attic:—so in Pass., αὖτις ὑποστρεφθείς Il., etc.
2. generally, "to return", Od., Hdt.; so in fut. mid., Od.
3. "to turn away", and so "elude" an attack, Eur., Xen.
4. part. ὑποστρέψας as adv. "reversely", Ar.
