Am″mo‐dyte (�), n. [L. ammodytes, Gr. � sand burrower, a kind of serpent; ἄμμοσ sand + � diver, � to dive.] (Zoöl.) (a) One of a genus of fishes; the sand eel. (b) A kind of viper in southern Europe.
