‖Ar′chæ‐op″te‐ryx (�), n. [Gr. αρχαἰ̑οσ ancient + πτέρυξ wing.] (Paleon.) A fossil bird, of the Jurassic period, remarkable for having a long tapering tail of many vertebræ with feathers along each side, and jaws armed with teeth, with other reptilian characteristics.
