Ar″chi‐tect (är″kĭ‐tĕkt), n. [L. architectus, architecton, Gr. � chief artificer, master builder; pref. αρχἰ- (E. archi-) + � workman, akin to � art, skill, � to produce: cf. F. architecte, It. architetto. See Technical.] 1. A person skilled in the art of building; one who understands architecture, or makes it his occupation to form plans and designs of buildings, and to superintend the artificers employed.

2. A contriver, designer, or maker.
