Au″gite (a̤″jīt), n. [L. augites, Gr. αυγἴτησ, fr. αυγἤ brightness: cf. F. augite.] A variety of pyroxene, usually of a black or dark green color, occurring in igneous rocks, such as basalt; — also used instead of the general term pyroxene.
