Hal″cy‐on (hăl″sĭ‐ŏn), n. [L. halcyon, alcyon, Gr. αλκυὥν, αλκυὤν: cf. F. halcyon.] (Zoöl.) A kingfisher. By modern ornithologists restricted to a genus including a limited number of species having omnivorous habits, as the sacred kingfisher (Halcyon sancta) of Australia.
