Pen′i‐ten″tia‐ry (–shȧ‐ry̆), a. [Cf. F. pénitentiaire.] 1. Relating to penance, or to the rules and measures of penance. “A penitentiary tax.” Abp. Bramhall.

2. Expressive of penitence; as, a penitentiary letter.
