‖Per′i‐os″te‐um (?), n. [NL., fr. Gr. περιόστεοσ round the bones; περί around + οστἔον a bone: cf. L. periosteon.] (Anat.) The membrane of fibrous connective tissue which closely invests all bones except at the articular surfaces.
