ἄφεσις

1. "a letting go, dismissal", Philipp. ap. Dem.:— "a quittance or discharge" from a bond, id=Dem.: "exemption" from service, Plut.: "a divorce", id=Plut.
2. "a letting go" (Lat. missio) of horses from the starting-post, and then "the starting-post" itself, ἰσώσας τἀφέσει τὰ τέρματα "having made" the winning-post "one" with the starting-post, i. e. having come back to the starting-post, Soph.
