δεῖπνον

Etym. δάπτω

1. in Hom. "the principal meal" of the day, —sometimes "the noonday meal", sometimes = ἄριστον, "the morning meal", sometimes = δόρπον, "the evening meal". In old attic "the midday or afternoon meal, dinner or supper":— ἀπὸ δείπνου straightway after "the meal", Il.; καλεῖν ἐπὶ δεῖπνον; δ. παραθεῖναι, etc.

2. generally, "fodder, provender", Il., Aesch.
