Etym. εὔχομαι

1. "a prayer, vow", Od., etc.: (but the common Homeric words are εὖχος and εὐχωλή); εὐχὴν ἐπιτελέσαι, Lat. vota persolvere, Hdt.; ἀποδιδόναι Xen.; κατὰ χιλίων εὐχὴν ποιήσασθαι χιμάρων to make "a vow" of a thousand goats, Ar.

2. "a mere wish, an aspiration", as opp. to reality, εὐχαῖς ὅμοια λέγειν to build castles in the air, Plat.

3. "a prayer for evil", i. e. "an imprecation", Aesch., Eur.
