Etym. κλῆρος

I. "to appoint" to an office "by lot", opp. to αἱρεῖσθαι or χειροτονεῖν, Hdt., attic:—of the lot, "to fall on", Lat. designare, Eur.:— Pass. "to be appointed by lot", Dem., etc.

2. "to cast lots, draw lots", Plat.;—so in Mid., Aesch., Dem.

3. in Mid. also, κληροῦσθαί τι "to have allotted one, obtain by lot", Eur., Aeschin.; also c. gen., Dem.

II. "to allot, assign", Pind., Thuc.

2. κλ. ὀμφάν "to deliver" an oracle, Eur.
