κωλύω

"to let, hinder, check, prevent":

1. c. acc. et inf. "to hinder or prevent" one "from" doing, Hdt., Soph., etc.; with a negative added, κ. τινὰ μὴ θανεῖν Eur., etc.:—Pass. "to be hindered", τοῦ ὕδατος πιεῖν "from" drinking of the water, Plat.; κωλυόμεσθα μὴ μαθεῖν Eur.; rarely with part., μὴ κωλύωνται περαιούμενοι Thuc.

2. c. gen. rei, κ. τινά τινος "to let or hinder" one "from" a thing, Xen.; so, κ. τινα ἀπό τινος id=Xen.

3. c. acc. rei, "to hinder, prevent, impede", Eur., Thuc.:—Pass., μηδὲ δαπάνηι κεκωλύσθω and "let there be" no "hindrance" by reason of expense, Thuc.

4. absol., ὁ κωλύσων "one to hinder", Soph.; τὸ κωλῦον "a hindrance", Xen.

5. often in 3 pers., οὐδὲν κωλύει "there is" nothing "to hinder", c. acc. et inf., Hdt., Ar.:— οὐδὲν κωλύει, absol., as a form of assent, "nothing hinders, be it so", Ar.
