1. "not eating, fasting", of persons, Hom.; c. gen., νῆστις βορᾶς Eur.:—metaph., νῆστιν ἀνὰ ψάμμον over the "hungry" sand, Aesch.

2. νῆστις νόσος, λιμός "hungry" famine, id=Aesch.; νήστισιν αἰκίαις the pains "of hunger", id=Aesch.; νήστιδες δύαι id=Aesch.
