νόμος

I. "anything assigned, a usage, custom, law, ordinance", Lat. institutum, Hes.; νόμος πάντων βασιλεύς "custom" is lord of all, Pind. ap. Hdt.; κατὰ νόμον according to "custom or law", Hes., Hdt., attic; poet. κὰν νόμον Pind.:— παρὰ νόμον contrary to "law", Aesch.:—dat. νόμῳ "by custom, conventionally", opp. to φύσει, Hdt., Arist.:—at Athens νόμοι were Solon.'s laws, those of Draco being called θεσμοί.

2. ἐν χειρῶν νόμῳ "by the law of force, in the fight or scuffle", Hdt.; ἐν χειρὸς νόμῳ "in actual warfare", Arist.; also, ἐς χειρῶν νόμον ἀπικέσθαι to come "to blows", Hdt.

II. "a musical mode or strain", Aesch., Plat., etc.; νόμοι κιθαρῳδικοί Ar.

2. "a song" sung in honour of some god, Hdt.; νόμοι πολεμικοί war- "tunes", Thuc.
