II. metaph., like περιβάλλω, "to bestow, confer upon", π. τινὶ βασιληίην, ἐλευθερίην Hdt., Thuc.; so, π. τὴν Μηδικὴν ἀρχὴν τοῖς Ἕλλησι "to put" the Median yoke "round" their necks, Thuc.
