I. "to sail, go by sea", Hom., etc.; c. acc. cogn., ὑγρὰ κέλευθα πλεῖν "to sail" the watery ways, Od.; hence in Pass., τὸ πεπλευσμένον πέλαγος Xen.;—metaph., πλεῖν ὑφειμένηι cf. ὑφίημι 111.

II. of ships, Il., Hdt., etc.

2. of other things, "to swim, float", Hom., etc.
