I. "a forefather, ancestor", Hdt., attic; οἱ ἄνωθεν πρ. Plat.; ἐκ προγόνων, Lat. antiquitus, id=Plat.:— also of gods "who are the authors or founders of a" race; Ζεῦ πρόγονε Eur.; θεοὶ πρόγονοι Plat.:—metaph., πόνοι πρόγονοι πόνων troubles "parents" of troubles, Soph.
II. "a child by a former marriage", i. e. "one's step-son", Lat. privignus, Eur.: fem. "a stepdaughter", Plut.
