Etym. σπουδή

I. of persons, "earnest, serious", Xen.; "active, zealous", Plut.

2. "good, excellent", Hdt., Plat.; σπουδαῖος τὴν τέχνην Xen.

3. of men "of character and importance", id=Xen.

4. in moral sense, "good", opp. to πονηρός, id=Xen.

II. of things, "worth one's serious attention, serious, weighty", Theogn., Hdt., attic

2. "good" of its kind, "excellent", Hdt., etc.

III. adv. σπουδαίως, "seriously, earnestly, well", Xen., etc.:—comp., -ότερον, id=Xen.; Sup. -ότατα, "most carefully, in the best way", Hdt.—There are also irreg. comp. and Sup. σπουδαι-έστερος, -έστατος.
