I. "high, lofty, high-raised", Lat. altus, sublimis, Hom., Hdt., Trag., etc.; of a "highland" country, χώρη ὀρεινὴ καὶ ὑψηλή Hdt.; ὑψηλὰ χωρία Thuc.

II. metaph. "high, lofty, stately", Pind., Plat.; ὑψηλὰ κομπεῖν to talk "loftily", Soph.; πνεῦμα ὑψηλὸν αἴρειν Eur.
