Etym. φιλέω
1. "friendly love, affection, friendship", distinct from ἔρως, as Lat. amicitia from "amor", Hdt., Eur., etc.; φ. ποιεῖσθαι πρός τινα Xen.; with gen., διὰ φιλίαν αὐτοῦ through "friendship for" him, Thuc.; ἡμετέρη φ. "friendship with" us, Theogn.; φιλία ἡ ἐμή Xen., etc.
