‖Ba‐sid″i‐um (�), n. [NL., dim. of Gr. βάσισ base.] (Bot.) A special oblong or pyriform cell, with slender branches, which bears the spores in that division of fungi called Basidiomycetes, of which the common mushroom is an example.
