Es‐sene″ (?), n.; pl.Essenes (#). [Gr. �, lit., physicians, because they practiced medicine, fr. Chald āsayā to heal, cf. Heb. asā.] One of a sect among the Jews in the time of our Savior, remarkable for their strictness and abstinence.
