2. "to take up", of a successor, τὴν ἀρχὴν παρά τινος Hdt., etc.; often also with the acc. omitted, ἐξεδέξατο Σαδυάττης (sc. τὴν βασιληΐην) he "succeeded", id=Hdt.

3. "to take up the argument", ὥσπερ σφαῖραν ἐκδ. τὸν λόγον Plat.

4. "to wait for, expect", Soph.
