ἐσθίω

1. "to eat", Lat. edo (cf. ἔδω), Hom., etc.; ἐσθ. τινός "to eat of" a thing (partitive gen.), Xen.:—Pass., οἶκος ἐσθίεται the house "is eaten up", we are eaten out of house and home, Od.

2. metaph., πάντας πῦρ ἐσθίει the fire "devours" all, Il.; ἐσθ. ἑαυτόν "to vex" oneself (like Homer's ὃν θυμὸν κατέδων), Ar.; ἐσθ. τὴν χελύνην "to bite" the lip, id=Ar.
