I. "a pool of standing water" left by the sea or a river, Il.: then, "a marshy lake, mere", Lat. palus, id=Il., Hdt., attic:—also, "a large pool or basin" (artificial), Hdt.
2. in Hom. and other Poets, "the sea."
II. Λίμναι, ῶν, αἱ, "a quarter of Athens" (once prob. "marshy)", near the Acropolis, in which stood the Lenaeum, Ar., Thuc., etc.
