III. as Subst., ἡ ξηρά (sc. γῆ), "dry land", Xen.; so, τὸ ξηρόν Hdt.; ναῦς ἐπὶ τοῦ ξηροῦ ποιεῖν to leave the ships "aground", Thuc.
