Etym. *ῥύω ῀ ἐρύω
1. "the force, swing, rush" of a body in motion, Lat. impetus, ῥύμῃ with "a swing", Thuc.; πτερύγων ῥύμη "the rush" of wings, Ar.; ἡ ῥ. τῶν ἵππων Xen.:—metaph., εὐτυχεῖ ῥύμῃ θεοῦ Eur.; ἡ ῥ. τῆς ὀργῆς "the vehemence of" passion, Dem.
