I. "a leaf;" in pl. "leaves", or collectively "the leaves, foliage" of a tree, Hom., Hdt., etc.; οἵη περ φύλλων γενεή, τοίη δὲ καὶ ἀνδρῶν as is the generation "of leaves", such is that of men, Il.; φύλλοις βάλλειν Eur.; in sg., φύλλον ἐλάας, poet. for ἐλάα, Soph.:—metaph. of choral songs, φύλλ᾽ ἀοιδᾶν Pind.
