{ A‐chene″ (�), A‐che″ni‐um (�) } n. [Gr. priv. + � to gape.] (Bot.) A small, dry, indehiscent fruit, containing a single seed, as in the buttercup; — called a naked seed by the earlier botanists. [Written also akene and achænium.]
