Arch′dea″con (�), n. [AS. arcediacon, archidiacon, L. archidiaconus, fr. Gr. �. See Arch-, pref., andDeacon.] In England, an ecclesiastical dignitary, next in rank below a bishop, whom he assists, and by whom he is appointed, though with independent authority. Blackstone.
