Asphyxia

{ ‖As‐phyx″i‐a (�), As‐phyx″y (�), } n. [NL. asphyxia, fr. Gr. �; ἀ priv. + � to throb, beat.] (Med.) Apparent death, or suspended animation; the condition which results from interruption of respiration, as in suffocation or drowning, or the inhalation of irrespirable gases.
