Rarefaction

Rar′e‐fac″tion (răr′ē̍‐făk″shŭn), n. [Cf. F. raréfaction. See Rarefy.] The act or process of rarefying; the state of being rarefied; — opposed to condensation; as, the rarefaction of air.
