(< σώφρων),

(a) to be of sound mind or in one's right mind: Mk 5:15, Lk 8:35; opp. to ἐκστῆναι, II Co 5:13 (Hdt.);

(b) to be temperate, discreet, self-controlled (opp. to μαίνεσθαι, ὑβρίζειν, etc.; Æsch., Thuc., al.): Tit 2:6; opp. to ὑπερφρονεῖν, Ro 12:3; σ. καὶ νήφειν, I Pe 4:7.†
