ἅγιος
Etym. ἄγος
"devoted to the gods, sacred, holy", Lat. sacer:
1. of things, esp. temples, Hdt., Xen., etc.: τὸ ἅγιον "the Temple", τὰ ἅγια τῶν ἁγίων "theHoly of Holies", NTest.
2. of persons, "holy, pure", Ar.; adv. ἁγίως, Isocr., NTest.—The word never occurs in Hom. or Trag., ἁγνός being used instead.
