I. "the bent arm", Hdt., etc.; mostly in pl., ἐν ἀγκάλαις "in the arms", Aesch., Eur.; ἐν ταῖς ἀγκ. Xen.;—in sg., φέρειν ἐν τῇ ἀγκάλῃ Hdt.

II. metaph. "anything closely enfolding", πετραία ἀγκάλη Aesch.; πόντιαι ἀγκάλαι "bights or arms of the sea", id=Aesch.; κυμάτων ἐν ἀγκάλαις Ar.
